What is osteopathy? It is a system of medicine, which provides skilled diagnosis and treatment primarily concerning the structure and function of the body i.e. the bones joints, muscle, ligaments and connective tissues. Seeks to overcome a wide range of diseases resulting in disturbance of the body’s framework and moving parts. Examination and treatment Initially an accurate diagnosis is the prerequisite of successful treatment. v On the persons first visit, a detailed case history is taken it will include complaint and past medical history.v A thorough physical examination is followed incorporating orthopaedic and neurological testing. Blood pressure, heart and lung examination may be performed and x-ray and scans could be required.v Treatments methods may include stretching passive repeated joint movements and manipulation techniques to restore normal function to a joint.v Many private health care insurances policies cover treatment as VHI, QUINN, and HSA etc. What does osteopathy treat? A common misconception is that osteopathy only deals with back pain. Back pain is the nations greatest single cause of lost working days and it does account for a large portion of the osteopaths work.It is by no means the only area in which successful treatment may be achieved its has great value in treating other conditions.
